Fishing is a leisure and a sport combined into one. Spending a few hours sitting on the riverbank or by the side of the canal surrounded by wildlife and fresh air. This may sound idyllic and simple but there is more to fishing than sitting on the side of a riverbank and putting a line into the water with a hook and bait with the hope of catching a fish. There is always a safety aspect for yourself and the fish.
When possible use barbless hooks. (Hooks that contain no barbs.) This is for the safety of the fish. You MIGHT loose the odd fish but I think I would prefure to do that than hurt any fish. When you go fishing it should be because you like to fish and you also like the fish you are fishing for. So take into consideration the health and care of the fish. Try to use hooks that will inflict as less stress and harm to the fish as possible.
The surrounding wildlife should also be a very big priority. Clear all broken lines and hooks away from the fishing area and leave it clean and safe. This is so that no line or hooks get caught on birds, duck, swans, and and mammals that live in the area. This is a very important bit of advice. Look after the nature and the nature will look after you.
When I go fishing I love to catch a fish then see it go back into the water and swim for another day to make more baby fish so that one day there will be lots more fish for me to catch. I never harm or kill a fish as I think of fish as a kind of friend (sad I know) and like to put them back to swim away.
The history of fishing can be traced back to ancient times when man used to catch there fish for the use of food to feed themselves and there family. There have been ancient paintings discovered in the country of Egypt dating back to nearly 2000BC (Before Christ). The early fisherman did not have his local tackle shop to goto to get his baits, fishing lures, hooks and line. He had to make his own hooks from bone and the line was made from vines. Fishing never really took off as a classed sport until the late 15th Century when they started using proper rods like what we understand them to be today. In 1653 the sport called fishing really took off. It was down to the publication of the Complete Angler by the author and English angler Izaak Walton.
